Good News and Bad on Crime Rate

Violent crime in San Diego is up nearly 15% over 1990, but overall crime is down, San Diego Police Chief Bob Burgreen said Wednesday.

Statistics presented to a City Council subcommittee showed that homicides were up nearly 24% in 1991 compared to 1990. The city’s 167 homicides last year set a record in San Diego.

A comparison of numbers between 1990 and 1991 shows reported rapes up 7.5%, from 439 to 472; robbery was up 23%, from 4,331 to 5,331, and aggravated assault rose 10%, from 7,142 to 7,860.

Burglary was also up, by 2.4%, but other property crimes decreased. Thefts dropped from 48,581 to 44,645, an 8% dip, and motor vehicle theft declined 12.5%, from 24,245 to 21,218. Overall property crimes were down 7%.
