NHL ROUNDUP : Jets Brought Down by Blues, 4-3

The Winnipeg Jets welcomed Ed Olczyk back Wednesday night and figured they were ready to make their move in the tight Smythe Division.

Olczyk, who had a leg injury, contributed a goal and an assist, but it wasn’t enough and the St. Louis Blues handed the Jets a 4-3 defeat at Winnipeg.

A victory would have moved the Jets into a tie with the Kings for second place. Instead, they fell into a tie for third with Edmonton. It was the third loss in the last four games for the Jets.

The Jets started fast when Randy Carlyle’s shot caromed off the stick of the Blues’ Paul Cavallini and into the net with less than six minutes gone.

From then until halfway through the final period, the Blues, who moved into second place in the Norris Division, dominated. With Brett Hull setting up two of the goals, they took a 4-1 lead.

The goals by Chris Janney and Olczyk brought the Jets to within a goal with eight minutes to play, but they couldn’t get another shot past Curtis Joseph.

Hartford 2, Montreal 2--When the Canadiens removed goaltender Patrick Roy for an extra attacker at Hartford, it worked.

Kirk Muller’s 29th goal with 31 seconds left tied the score.

Vancouver 6, Buffalo 5--Trevor Linden scored the first and last goals for the Canucks as they returned home to end a five-game winless streak.

Calgary 6, Boston 4--Before the game was half completed at Calgary, Gary Roberts had his 34th goal and an assist as the Flames took a 4-0 lead. The Bruins rallied to within a goal before falling back.
