Sunset Strip and W. Hollywood Mall

Raleigh Enterprises’ project, by the developer’s own admission, will add 7,000 more cars to daily traffic on the Sunset Strip (Times, Feb. 6). It is inconceivable that this monstrous mall should even have been considered by the city of West Hollywood without discussing it with the taxpayers of Los Angeles who live in the nearby hills.

Sunset Boulevard belongs to us all--not to West Hollywood. The inevitable gridlock will trap us in our homes and endanger our lives. We will be forced to endure two years of misery during construction. Who needs another mall? Just one mile away, on the site of Schwab’s Drugstore, is a 150,000-square-foot one that hasn’t even opened yet. This is a recession?

Our councilman, Michael Woo, refuses to help. He just doesn’t get the picture, but he won’t need special lenses to see it when he comes up for reelection.

The Sunset Strip is a world-famous landmark. There are many better ways to use this piece of property. Come on, West Hollywood! Use your imagination and stop the proliferation of the sleazy element already among us.
