Beach Stretch Closed Since Storms Reopens
A one-mile stretch of sand at the border of Huntington Beach and Newport Beach--closed since storms dumped raw sewage, trees and other debris--was reopened Friday to swimming, surfing and diving.
County health officials closed the area on either side of the Santa Ana River 10 days ago, after heavy rains caused three separate sewage spills into the ocean.
The largest spill resulted when flooding caused 2 million gallons of untreated waste to spill into the river, which is the border between the two cities. The area where it empties into the ocean is a popular surfing spot.
Meanwhile, Newport Bay from the Balboa Ferry to the harbor’s mouth is now also open, but all other parts of the bay remain officially closed because of hazards left by the storms.
