BOXING UPDATE : Ali Is a No-Show at Weigh-In

Share

A surprisingly large crowd of more than 300 people jammed into the Pacific Ballroom at the Princess Resort Hotel Friday night for the Terry Norris-Carl Daniels weigh-in. But it’s doubtful more than a handful of people showed up to see the actual weigh-in.

The crowd came to catch a glimpse of of boxing icon, Muhammad Ali, whose appearance was advertised on XTRA-AM. But “The Greatest” turned out to be the great no-show. Blair Krueger, Ali’s lawyer, said the former champion had been flying all day and was too tired to appear.

But Ken Norton, who beat Ali at the San Diego Sports Arena almost 20 years ago, did show up at the weigh-in.

Ali later appeared at a pre-fight party at the resort and signed autographs for an hour.

Daniels and Norris both weighed 152 pounds, two pounds under the limit for junior middleweights. There were no sparks between Norris and Daniels when they posed for pictures. Daniels, in his first title fight, actually seemed more relaxed than Norris, who is defending his World Boxing Council super welterweight fight for the sixth time.

While the two went fist-to-fist for the cameras, Daniels couldn’t stop smiling and appeared more relaxed than he has all week.

But Norris was all business as he barely cracked a smile for the cameras. The only emotion he showed was when he raised his arms high after his weight was announced.

Former New York Jets defensive end Mark Gastineau (7-0) weighed in at 255 pounds, while his opponent Jaime Berg (1-2) weighed only 202.
