THE DAY MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. WAS SHOT: A Photo History of the Civil Rights Movement by Jim Haskins (Scholastic Inc.: $5.95). Haskins has compiled a striking array of photographs, engravings and newspaper pages documenting the African-American struggle for freedom. The collection begins with the trial of Joseph Cinque, a Mendi chieftain who led a revolt on the slave ship Amistad: Ex-President John Quincy Adams argued Cinque’s case before the Supreme Court in 1839. (Cinque won and was returned to Africa with his fellow prisoners.) The most moving photographs chronicle the accelerating civil-rights campaigns of the 1960s, which seem both immediate and distant. Although intended for juvenile readers, Haskins’ modest book offers valuable visual reference material for readers of all ages.
