BIZ BUZZ: Marko Babineau, the former general manager of Geffen’s DGC label whose secretary filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit in November alleging that he had sexually harassed her, was back as an independent promoter briefly working a Geffen single this month.

Babineau, who recently opened his own independent promotion business, MJB & Associates in Bel-Air, was hired by Nick Wechsler, Robbie Robertson’s manager, to promote Robertson’s Geffen single “Back to Your Woods.” But Babineau was reportedly fired after only two weeks following complaints from representatives at Geffen and from other industry officials.

“It’s a shame for Marko,” Wechsler said. “He’s one of the best promotion people in the business and a friend of mine. But Geffen (Records) and others were not pleased about it. Everybody got uptight and when we started to come under fire for it, I decided it would be best to terminate him. Robbie didn’t even know I hired Marko and I didn’t want Robbie to suffer any ill consequences as a result of the negative fallout from the lawsuit.”

A Geffen spokeswoman declined to comment on whether the firm pressured Wechsler to stop Babineau from promoting the project. Babineau was unavailable for comment.
