No Joy in Kidville
Regarding Peter Rainer’s Film Comment “Where’s the Joy, Magic in Today’s Children’s Movies?” (Feb. 9):
I used to believe in the magic that is in my pile of rejected scripts in the corner of my room. After what seems like hundreds of rejections from executives telling me kids are “looking for the Big Stuff” or that they need scripts with more of “an edge,” it’s hard to keep believing.
One executive told me that Hollywood has all but stopped making G-rated films for theatrical release. Agents apologize, saying they “can’t get behind the material enough to represent it.” Translated: They can’t sell it.
I used to think there was always a market for a good script. I’m not sure anyone still believes that.
