Glendale : Parking Plan Draws Fire
A joint city and college plan that calls for an increase in Glendale College parking spaces drew criticism at a public hearing from students who would be forced to pay higher meter rates in city lots or buy permits for a new lot on campus.
“Books are costing more, classes are costing more,” said Steve Martin, president of the Glendale College Honors Society. “This is not going to be received well.”
The project, prepared by International Parking Design of Sherman Oaks, requires that students pay an $80 annual fee to park in a proposed $2.7 million, 750-space lot on college grounds off Mountain Street, or park in surrounding city lots. Meter rates in those lots would rise from the 5 cents per half hour to 25 cents.
During the hearing Tuesday at the Civic Auditorium, Student Body President Armen Bartanians said that proposed parking restrictions on streets could relieve congestion in residential neighborhoods. But, Bartanians said, “I don’t know if a new lot will solve the students’ problems.”
