Long Beach : Unopposed Candidate Appointed to School Board
Former school administrator Edward M. Eveland won a seat on the Long Beach Unified School District board this week without an election. The board voted unanimously Monday to appoint Eveland after no other candidate in Eveland’s voting district filed for the April election. Incumbent Harriet Williams, a board member since 1979, is retiring.
Eveland, 65, will represent District 4, which includes south and southeast Long Beach, part of Signal Hill and Santa Catalina Island.
The district saves $57,000 by canceling the election in that district.
The District 2 seat will remain on the ballot. In that contest, challenger Donald Moore faces incumbent Bobbie Smith to represent central and west Long Beach.
Eveland retired in 1990 after a 38-year career with Long Beach Unified. He started as an English teacher at Wilson High School and also served as a principal at three high schools and as an assistant superintendent.
