COUNTYWIDE : State Funds Sought for Wastemobile

Share

The County Board of Supervisors has applied for a $120,000 state grant to help start a “toxic wastemobile” program to help residents dispose of unwanted motor oil, paints, pesticides and antifreeze.

The wastemobile is a specially designed waste-storage building mounted on a tractor-trailer.

County officials say the wastemobile would reduce illegal waste dumping because residents with hazardous wastes would no longer have to drive to a landfill or wait for the one day each year when cities set up temporary disposal locations.

The program would cost about $450,000 for 12 months, county officials said. The wastemobile would visit Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and east county communities twice a year. If the program is successful, county officials would expand it countywide, said Norma Camacho, county waste management analyst.

The county plans to put the wastemobile program to bid in April, and it would begin operating in August or September.
