Regarding the decision of the Los Angeles City Council to push for a “Buy American” policy (Feb. 6), I found an interesting similarity while conducting genealogical research on my great-grandmother, Placida Ruelas, who married a John Turner (in 1853). He ran a general store around the old Plaza and among other items, sold flour. I came across references to the editorials of the Star (Feb. 22, 1855), one of Los Angeles’ earliest newspapers. They exhorted its readers to purchase Los Angeles flour in order to keep their money at home and add to the wealth of the state. It told them to “cherish” home productions and manufacturers. Times don’t change!
