Lonnie S. Turner; CSUN Professor

Lonnie S. Turner, who taught political science at Cal State Northridge since 1968, has died at his Northridge home. He was 53.

Turner died Wednesday of cancer, said his wife, Judi Turner.

Born in Salt Lake City, he received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah and master’s and doctoral degrees from UCLA, all in political science. Turner also served in the U. S. Coast Guard from 1960 to 1962.

He began his teaching career at CSUN, where he taught such courses as criminal procedure, jurisprudence and American government. CSUN’s Pi Sigma Alpha political science honor society voted him 1985 Teacher of the Year.

In addition to his wife of 26 years, Turner in survived by his son, Ben Turner of Northridge; parents, Roy and Vonda Turner of Salt Lake City, and brothers, David Roy Turner and Randy Turner, both of Salt Lake City.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakwood Memorial Park chapel, 22601 Lassen St., Chatsworth. Bastian & Perrott Mortuary in Northridge is handling the arrangements.
