BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Bonilla: Mets Are Team to Beat
Bobby Bonilla arrived at camp in Port St. Lucie, Fla., and said the New York Mets are the team to beat in the National League East.
The Mets signed Bonilla to a five-year, $29-million deal, and the right fielder said his former club, the two-time defending champion Pittsburgh Pirates, are no better than second in the division. Especially, he said, if Met right-hander Dwight Gooden returns to form.
Reliever Doug Henry, who set a Milwaukee Brewer record by converting 15 consecutive save opportunities last season, signed a one-year contract with the team. . . . The Detroit Tigers signed right-hander Steve Ontiveros to a minor league contract. Ontiveros is 18-18 with a 3.78 earned-run average and 19 saves in the big leagues.
