Kelso Teacher

I am writing in response to Michele Fuetsch’s article about Kelso Elementary School (Feb. 3). The article states, “Jennifer Heath said what she remembers most about her Los Angeles principal is the reprimand she got for not using the requisite, district-approved colors on her bulletin board.”

First of all, I did not make that statement, and secondly it does not belong in this article. I distinctly remember my interview and I did discuss differences in schools and principals when it pertained to the questions I was asked. During our interview I pointed out many positive experiences that I had in my year at LAUSD, such as the mentor program, and what I had learned from those experiences.

While I admire Fuetsch’s desire to bring out the positive aspects of public education, I feel it was in poor taste to include such a statement in the article. Society needs to be aware of the successes of our public schools.

Educators are working very hard to provide our youth with the best possible education. All educators need to work together, not compete or find fault with one another. Unfortunately the statement like the one attributed to me only hurts public education overall.
