NEW DIGS: If you build it, they will come. The new terminal at John Wayne Airport opened in September of 1990, so last year was the first full year of operation. Result? Passenger traffic jumped 16.5% to a record 5.34 million. Nationwide, airline passenger traffic was reported down 3%, partly because of a weak economy and the Persian Gulf War. Officials said John Wayne bucked the trend because it gets a higher percentage of business travelers than most airports.
