Andy Van Slyke’s 7-year-old son, Scott, saved his 3-year-old brother from drowning in a hot tub at the condominium complex in Bradenton, Fla., where their family is staying during spring training.
“It was amazing. Jared weighs 33 pounds and Scott weighs only 53, but he carried him out of the water,” said Lauri Van Slyke, the wife of the Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder.
Jared had turned blue, but was fine after a night in the hospital.
Mike Kelly, the Atlanta Braves’ 1991 No. 1 draft choice from Los Alamitos High, underwent surgery to remove a benign lymph node growth from his upper groin area. . . . Bullpen coach Mike Ryan of the Philadelphia Phillies was hospitalized because of an irregular heartbeat.
