OUTLOOK

Dana Hills won the league championship last season, then had the league’s biggest loss with the graduation of league Most Valuable Player Jon Spaulding. He was 10-1 last season and was a first-team all-Southern Section 4-A selection. The Dolphins have only two starters back from last season’s team and that worries Canary more than the loss of one player. Wolter is an excellent defensive shortstop--as good as any shortstop in Orange County, according to Canary--who can swing the bat effectively. Last season, Wolter hit .342 with 17 RBIs and 19 runs scored. This season, he’ll be counted on to be a team leader. Anderson was a first-team all-league pitcher with a 4-2 record and a 1.51 earned-run average. But beyond those two, there isn’t much varsity experience to count on. Anderson and newcomer Olson should give the Dolphins solid pitching. Wolter and Lefebvre should add good defense up the middle and that’s about it for the team’s strengths. Canary believes Dana Hills will be a weak-hitting club. He also said Smith is a quick learner and could prove to be a good hitter. The number of questions facing Dana Hills probably limit the Dolphins to a middle-of-the-pack finish, however.
