OUTLOOK

The Chargers have been one of the league’s most consistent teams since 1983, winning four league championships in that span. They also have advanced to the Southern Section quarterfinals twice (1984 and 1990), the semifinals once (1991) and the finals once (1988). That tradition is only one reason why El Toro could emerge as the team to beat when league play begins later this month. Santoro and Jackson are the best hitters among the Chargers’ six returning starters. Santoro hit .347 and will be the key to what figures to be the strongest outfield in the league. Jackson batted .313 in ’91. Wiggins gives the Chargers a power-hitting designated hitter. Ver Wayne, who was an all-league selection last season as a sophomore, was 9-3 with a 2.53 ERA. Va Houten was 3-0 last season. Robertson and Mason saw limited action last season, but DeLeon liked what he saw. The Chargers will be tested early in the Loara tournament beginning Friday and at the Colonial Classic at Orlando, Fla., April 13. The Orlando tournament comes seven games into the league season.
