OUTLOOK

There is nowhere to go but up for the Tritons, who appear to have as good a shot at the league championship as any team. Carlson, in his second season at San Clemente, thinks the team’s defense and hitting have improved dramatically over last year. He believes the key is the pitching staff’s development. Wanders was 1-3 with a 4.87 earned-run average in limited action on the varsity last season. Key was 3-1 with a 1.94 ERA during American Legion play last summer. San Clemente was 12-6 during the summer. A transfer from Santa Margarita, Stewart has had his fastball clocked in the 80-m.p.h. range, according to Carlson. Potentially, there is talent on the mound, but Carlson believes his pitchers need to prove themselves during league play. Among the hitters, Brady (.294 with 22 runs and 14 stolen bases) and Greyshock (at .302 the team’s top returning hitter) were all-league selections last season. Those two will provide the team’s leadership, Carlson says. Scott hit .347 with three home runs and 18 RBIs during the summer, which makes him the top hitting newcomer.
