Since the beginning of the golden age of data processing, there has existed a select group of individuals in the industry who, despite their minority position, have struggled against the excesses of the “IBM approach” and sought other, more effective means of providing information services to their companies (“Under the Big Gray Cloud at IBM,” by Carla Lazzareschi, Feb. 2).

Little wonder, now that the alarm has sounded, that IBM is scrambling to understand the marketplace that it so arrogantly dominated for 35 years.
