New Options Offered for Trains and Rental Cars Within Greece

Share

Rail Europe has introduced new rail and car travel options for journeying within Greece this year.

One rail pass offers any five days out of a 15-day period for unlimited travel in first-class on the Greek rail system. The price, based on two people traveling together, is $56 per person.

Another option is a rail pass allowing unlimited first-class travel on any 10 days out of a one-month period. The cost, also structured around two travelers using the pass together, is $99 per person. A solo traveler can get the five-days-out-of-15 pass for $66, the 10-days-a-month option for $119.

The Greek Rail & Drive pass permits any five days of first-class rail travel and three days of a Hertz car rental out of a 15-day period. Based on two people traveling together, the cost is $129. Another rail and drive pass allows 10 days of first-class rail travel and three days’ use of a rented car from Hertz for $175 per person, again for two travelers.

The rail system covers only the Greek mainland.

Hertz has about 30 car rental stations in Greece, including Athens, Piraeus, Patras and Salonika on the mainland, and on such Greek islands as Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Santorini, Kos, Patmos and Mykonos. Cars can be dropped off without any extra charge at a different station than where they were picked up. However, this drop-off privilege doesn’t cover the Greek islands. Cars must have to be returned on the same island on which they were rented.

Passes must be bought in the United States through travel agents or Rail Europe at (800) 345-1990.

KD River Cruises of Europe has reduced its 1992 fares by 3% over 1991. The line operates cruises on the Rhine River and its tributaries, the Moselle and the Main; on the Elbe River, which flows from Czechoslovakia into southeastern Germany and northwest to Hamburg, and the waterways of the Netherlands.

During the high season, from June 1 to mid-October, the five-day “Grand Europe Cruise” on the Rhine costs from $990 to $1,180 this year, compared to $1,020 to $1,215 in 1991.

An additional 20% reduction will be available in April and May on all the company’s sailings on the Rhine and Moselle, and in April on sailings along the Elbe. For example, the five-day Rhine sailing will be priced starting at $795 instead of $990.
