Goalie Ed Belfour was waiting for the Chicago Blackhawks to have complete games back to back. He is waiting no more.

“Any time you have two exciting games, you have that good feeling that the team played great and you couldn’t do anything wrong,” Belfour said Sunday after making 33 saves in a 4-0 victory over the Boston Bruins at Chicago.

Jeremy Roenick scored his 51st goal, 24 hours after scoring his 50th during Chicago’s 2-1 victory at Boston.

Belfour has seen the Blackhawks waste some recent opportunities.

“It’s nice to get back in the groove after blowing three-goal leads against New Jersey last Thursday and against Toronto a few days earlier,” he said. “The guys were great in front of me, which of course made it a lot easier for me.”

Montreal 4, Detroit 1--Brian Skrudland’s two goals, his first in more than a year, helped the Canadiens win a battle of division leaders at Montreal.

Skrudland, who has endured two long injury layoffs since last fall, scored his first goal in 32 games this season and his first since March 1, 1991, when he connected early in the second period. He added another in the third.

Denis Savard and Mathieu Schneider also scored for Adams Division-leading Montreal (40-22-8), which has lost only once in 13 games.

Brad Marsh scored the lone goal for the Norris Division-leading Red Wings, who were coming off a 4-4 tie in Quebec on Saturday in the start of a six-game trip.

Vancouver 7, Philadelphia 3--Sergio Momesso scored two goals in the third period as the Canucks won at Philadelphia.

The Flyers came into the game with a nine-game (8-0-1) home unbeaten streak and had allowed only 24 goals in their last 11 games.

New York Islanders 6, Buffalo 2--Ray Ferraro gave the Rangers the lead with the first period’s only two goals and the Islanders never looked back in winning at Buffalo.

Ferraro also had an assist and former Sabres Pierre Turgeon and Benoit Hogue, obtained in a trade Oct. 25 for Pat LaFontaine, each had two points.

Minnesota 4, Winnipeg 2--Darcy Wakaluk made 17 saves in winning his third consecutive start in place of exiled goalie Jon Casey as the North Stars beat the Jets at Minneapolis.

Dave Gagner, Brian Bellows, Ulf Dahlen and Mike Modano scored for the North Stars, who moved eight points ahead of Toronto in the race for the final Norris Division playoff spot.

Casey, a star during Minnesota’s surge to the Stanley Cup finals last spring, was expected to return to the Stars’ roster Monday--exactly one week after he was sent to the International Hockey League. At Kalamazoo, Mich., Casey went 2-1-1 with a 2.69 goals-against average.

San Jose 4, Toronto 1--Jeff Hackett had 46 saves--including 23 during the second period--to help the Sharks beat the Maple Leafs at Daly City, Calif.

“It may seem like we’re just playing out the string, but there’s a lot of guys here who want to win,” Hackett said.

The Sharks, who were eliminated from the playoff race during the weekend, ran their home record to a 13-20-3.
