Hunt’s third year at Sonora definitely will be his most challenging. He had his best season with the Raiders last year when they tied Fullerton for third place and advanced to the playoffs, losing to Fontana in the first round. This year, however, the Raiders will have to fight and scrap just to stay out of the league cellar. Sonora lost 10 of 12 varsity players to graduation, including such first-team, all-league players as Amy Recouper, a catcher who hit .412 and is now at Colorado State; Lisa Goldsmith, a shortstop who hit .342 and went on to Arizona State, and Christina Jeanneret, a third baseman who hit .303 and is playing at Fullerton College. Rodriguez, a second baseman who hit .221 last year, is the only returning starter with any experience. Kind, a transfer from Whittier Christian, gives Sonora strength on the mound that it didn’t have last season. But she will be hard-pressed for offensive or defensive support. Lindgren, a freshman, shows promise at third base. Hunt will have to sort through the newcomers to find other prospects. Offense and defense, of course, are big questions. Despite a lack of experience and senior leadership, Hunt, who coached the boys’ soccer team to a league title, seems destined to take the elevator from the league penthouse to the cellar unless his young team can jell quickly.
