SANTA CLARITA : City Applies for Clean Air Award
The city of Santa Clarita has applied to the South Coast Air Quality Management District for a clean air award.
Santa Clarita wants the recognition that comes with winning one of the 14 annual AQMD awards to Southern California municipalities and businesses that demonstrate innovative approaches to improving air quality, spokeswoman Gail Foy said.
The city has spent $1,200 to print 50 brochures on recycled paper touting its achievements, which include funding a commuter rail station, planning a 14.5-mile bike trail along the Santa Clara River and planting more than 2,500 trees on public property in the past two years.
The awards are given out in early May, said Bill Kelly, an AQMD spokesman.
Last year, the cities of San Bernardino County won one of the awards under the category of model community achievements, the same category in which Santa Clarita has applied. The cities won for creating a joint regional air quality plan that planners and elected officials use in deciding on development issues.
