PREP ROUNDUP : Holcomb’s Homer in 11th Lifts El Dorado to Victory

Shawn Holcomb hit a three-run home run in the 11th inning to give El Dorado a 5-2 victory over Ocean View in a Loara tournament baseball game Monday in Huntington Beach.

Holcomb’s homer came after Brian Loyd singled, stole second and Tyson DowDell was intentionally walked with two outs. Holcomb also hit a home run in the fifth inning to tie the score, 2-2. He also pitched the first three innings, allowing a run and two hits.

Graham Clemons (1-0) pitched the final four innings, allowing no runs, for El Dorado.

In other Loara tournament games:

Laguna Hills 5, Anaheim 4--Ron DeVito’s pinch-hit single in the sixth gave host Laguna Hills a 4-3 lead, and the Hawks added another run in the inning to make it 5-3.

Jake Barber led off the sixth with a home run for Anaheim. Brett Nista had a home run in the first for Laguna Hills.

Santiago 7, Los Alamitos 6--Eric Scanlan hit a two-run home run and had three runs batted in for visiting Santiago.

Sunny Hills 5, Marina 4--Mark Veronda hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh to give Sunny Hills (1-2) a 5-3 lead.

In the Newport Elks Tournament:

Newport Harbor 1, Estancia 0--Matt Paleferri (1-0) had eight strikeouts and allowed only a third-inning single for host Newport Harbor (1-0). Aaron McKown singled and later scored on a fielder’s choice for Newport Harbor (1-0) in the fourth inning.

Mater Dei 24, Costa Mesa 1 (6 innings)--Senior Darren Troilo had two home runs and a double, scored four times and drove in five runs for visiting Mater Dei (1-0).

Cale Carter had three hits and two RBIs and Keith Frankel had two hits and four RBIs for Mater Dei, which sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs in the fifth.

Capistrano Valley 9, Santa Ana 3--Scott Patton had a double and scored three runs for the Cougars (1-0), who blew open a two-run game with four runs in the top of the seventh. Capistrano Valley turned a triple play in the second inning.

Mission Viejo 4, Trabuco Hills 1--Jeff Carr had a two-run double in the sixth inning to give visiting Mission Viejo a 2-0 lead. Neal Caldwell allowed no hits and struck out five in the first four innings for the Diablos.
