KYOTO : Talk About the Animals
An international conference on endangered wildlife will formally take up proposals today to allow the resumption of trade in elephant meat and hides.
The elephant question has received the most attention at the meeting of the 112-nation Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Five African nations--South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi and Namibia--are seeking an easing of the ban on trade in elephant products, saying they want to be able to profit from animal resources as long as they can sustain their numbers.
The chief U.S. delegate, John Turner, suggested that the United States might support trade in other elephant products because it could ultimately strengthen the ban on ivory by winning cooperation from the five nations involved.
