The Bush Administration on Wednesday asked Congress to approve a $2.5-billion sale of Patriot and Hawk antiaircraft missiles to Kuwait to shore up friendly forces in the Persian Gulf region.

The Pentagon said lawmakers have been notified of the plan to sell 12 launch batteries and 792 missiles, made by Raytheon Corp. of Lexington, Mass., to Kuwait. Congress now has 30 days in which to allow the sale to go through or reject it.

U.S. defense officials, who asked not to be identified, said they expect approval of the move despite criticism in Congress of alleged human rights abuses in Kuwait and of continued U.S. arms sales to the region.
