WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

San Diego State advanced to the Western Athletic Conference tournament semifinals with a 66-58 victory over Wyoming (14-14) at Salt Lake City. SDSU (18-10) will meet top-seeded Creighton today in the semifinals.

Senior center Kieishsha Garnes led the Aztecs with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman point guard Falisha Wright added 19 points, and freshman forward Michelle Suman had nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Wyoming led at halftime, 31-30, despite shooting just 28% from the field. SDSU made 45% of its shots (27 of 60) and 11 of 14 free throws.

Creighton advanced by routing No. 8 New Mexico, 89-50.

MEN’S TENNIS

SDSU shut out Wisconsin, 6-0, at SDSU. Joe McDonough defeated Joey Deer, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles; Kerry Safdie beat Dan Nabedrick, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2; and Chris Numbers prevailed over Aaron Dubie, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3. Other winners for the Aztecs (7-1) were Jeff Beloli, Steve Saba and Scott Hansen.

UC San Diego came up short against Northern Illinois, losing 5-4 to fall to 1-6. Northern Illinois is 5-12.

The University of San Diego plays host to an eight-team field as it begins its annual invitational this morning through Sunday. Teams involved are Yale, Penn, Iowa State, Indiana State, Navy, Pacific, Nebraska and USD. The Toreros (6-2) have won the tournament every year, including last year’s 5-4 victory over Iowa, 5-4.

USD is now ranked 21st in the ITCA/Volvo Collegiate rankings and has the No. 1 player in the nation in senior Jose Juis Noriega.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

SDSU defeated Loyola Marymount, 15-5, 8-15, 15-13, 15-13 in a nonconference game at the Aztecs Peterson Gym. Four SDSU players were in double figures in kills: Aaron Boss had 24, John Hyden spiked 21, Rob Thomas his 14 and Aaron Hartin contributed 13.
