TOSS THE CHALK: A prototype classroom at UC Irvine is equipped with the latest in computers, display screens, audio and video compact discs and an eight-foot screen. Fiber-optic cables connect the 44-seat Technology Enhanced Classroom to other computers on campus. School officials brag that it will make the blackboard “as outmoded as cave painting.” But it’s real strength “lies in its flexibility,” says Dan Bigos, UCI’s manager of microcomputer services.
