World IN BRIEF : SCOTLAND : 11 Oil Workers Die in Helicopter Crash
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Eleven oil workers died when their helicopter crashed into the North Sea in stormy weather, a Shell company official said in Aberdeen, Scotland. The helicopter was carrying a crew of two and 15 workers from Shell’s Cormorant Alpha oil platform to a transit vessel waiting 200 yards away when it hit the water. Six people were rescued by aircraft and ships battling gale-force winds and snow showers, but at least one man was swept off a life raft before help arrived.
