An Antelope Valley College sociology instructor is one of four community college instructors in the state named recipients of the Hayward Award for Excellence in Education.

Martha Wengert was honored by the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges for her commitment to students and the college, Antelope Valley College spokesman Steve Standerfer said.

It was the second year in a row that the award went to an Antelope Valley College faculty member. Theater arts instructor Bruce Smith won the award last year.

College President Allan Kurki said the awards are “a tremendous testimony to the caliber of the faculty we have here at this college.”

Other award winners were Denny Burzynski of West Valley College in Northern California, Patricia Grignon of Saddleback College in Mission Viejo and Charles Wall of Bakersfield College.

The award is named for former California Community College Chancellor Gerald C. Hayward. Each winner receives a plaque and $1,000.
