Orion Keeps Rights to Oscar-Nominated Film: A Manhattan federal judge declined to strip Orion Pictures of its exclusive role as distributor of “Raise the Red Lantern,” nominated for an Academy Award as the best foreign-language film of 1991. The producers of “Red Lantern” had urged Bankruptcy Judge Burton Lifland to scrap their contract with Orion, which is in bankruptcy organization, unless the studio could show it was prepared to adequately promote the movie and exploit its Oscar nomination. Orion reiterated its view that the studio is upholding all of its obligations to promote and market the Chinese film.
