Albertson’s Pulls ‘W.A.R.’ Ads in 7 States: Albertson’s Inc. has halted a “war against recession” advertising campaign in seven states after complaints that it glorified war. The spots, designed by Albertson’s Santa Monica-based ad agency, Kresser-Craig, will continue in California, however. The “W.A.R.” ads boasted that the Boise, Idaho-based supermarket chain had declared war on the recession with low prices made possible through special deals negotiated with suppliers. Television and radio spots featured mock news bulletins that included a military-style spokesman dressed in camouflage fatigues announcing Albertson’s declaration of war on high prices. Others featured a mock television war correspondent listing low prices in an Albertson’s store.
