LOS ANGELES : Hearing in Parent’s Suit Against District Delayed

Share

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge on Wednesday postponed a hearing on an agreement that could settle a landmark lawsuit charging the Los Angeles school district with an unequal distribution of school resources among the middle class and poor.

The district and plaintiffs in Rodriguez et al vs. the Los Angeles Unified School District are due back in court April 8, where they will tell Judge Ralph Nutter whether they have agreed to accept a consent decree that would equalize spending among district schools.

The sticking point is an amendment to the decree approved last week by the Board of Education. It states that the district would be considered in compliance if 90% of the schools meet the agreement’s equality standards, a figure plaintiffs say would allow 60 schools to remain out of compliance indefinitely.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs say they will consult with representatives of minority communities before making a final decision.
