Ferguson Leads SDSU to Victory

San Diego State scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to edge Keio (Japan) University, 6-5, in an exhibition at SDSU’s Smith Field on Wednesday.

Brent Ferguson was the offensive hero, going three for five and stealing four bases.

He also moved Steve Dietz over to third with a single in the ninth inning to set up the winning run. Dietz, who had singled and stole second, later crossed the plate and broke a 5-5 tie on a passed ball.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State, ranked 13th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn., shut out Princeton, 8-0.

Sue Hawke defeated Aila Winkler, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, then teamed with Nicole Storto at No. 2 doubles for a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Melissa Reubin and Karen Hammerback.

SDSU, which plays host to No. 2 Stanford on Tuesday, improved to 6-4, and Princeton fell to 0-3.

SOFTBALL

University of San Diego swept a doubleheader from LaVerne, 5-4 and 2-0, to improve to 11-1. In the second game, pitcher Hillary Savage pitched the shutout without striking out a batter. She allowed only one hit and one walk. Offensively, Melissa Reinard went three for four.
