NHL ROUNDUP : Oilers Beat Devils, Make a Run at Kings, 5-3

Anatoli Semenov and Craig MacTavish scored 14 seconds apart in the third period Thursday night, sending the Edmonton Oilers to a 5-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils at East Rutherford, N.J.

Edmonton, which moved to within five points of the second-place Kings in the Smythe Division, is on a 7-2-1 surge.

Ron Tugnutt made his first start for the Oilers since he was acquired in a trade with Quebec and made 26 saves.

Pittsburgh 6, Quebec 3--Mario Lemieux and Bob Errey scored short-handed during the same penalty as the Penguins downed the Nordiques at Pittsburgh.

Kevin Stevens had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh to set an NHL season scoring record by U.S.-born players with 112. Joe Mullen had 110 for Calgary in 1988-89.

Pittsburgh moved into a third-place tie with New Jersey in the Patrick Division at 78 points.

Quebec is 1-28-8 on the road.

St. Louis 4, Boston 1--Rich Sutter scored while lying on the ice to break a 1-1 tie in second period and the Blues won for the 10th time in 49 games at Boston.

The Blues swept three games with the Bruins this season.

Chicago 4, Minnesota 1--The Blackhawks clinched a playoff spot by beating the North Stars at Chicago.

Stephane Matteau gave the Blackhawks the lead 41 seconds into the game. Frantisek Kucera and Jocelyn Lemieux scored 22 seconds apart midway through the second period to make it 3-0.

Calgary 3, San Jose 1--Mike Vernon made 30 saves and Gary Roberts’ goal snapped a 1-1 tie in the third period as the Flames beat the Sharks at Calgary.
