PORTRAITS OF PASSION: Aging: Defying the Myth by Marshall B. Stearn (Park West: $10.95, illustrated). Stearn interviewed a diverse group of Americans, including Charles Schulz, Steve Allen, Bella Lewitzky, Dave Brubeck and Rollo May, who continue to work after passing the conventional retirement age of 65. His subjects share a sense of commitment to what they do; old age may be a source of occasionally inconvenient medical problems for them, but it’s clearly no barrier to continued experimentation and creativity. Many of the chapters seem needlessly brief and leave the reader longing for a more complete account. Stearn’s text contains a dismaying number of typos.
