Brad Gennaro struck the finishing blow to a 13-hour, 27-minute tripleheader by doubling home two runs in the bottom of the seventh in San Diego State’s 3-2 victory Sunday over Brigham Young at Smith Field.

With two outs, the bases loaded and the count full, Gennaro--who struck out in three previous at bats--doubled off the wall in right field against losing pitcher Ryan Hancock. Gennaro’s double came at 12:27 a.m. and gave the Aztecs two victories in the Western Athletic Conference series that began at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Gennaro had hit a grand slam in SDSU’s 11-2 victory Saturday, after BYU took the opener, 10-5. Matt Franco was two for four, scoring two runs, and Scott Hofstede got the victory in relief for SDSU (18-7, 2-1). The Cougars are 14-9, 1-2.

Kevin Herde singled in the winning off reliever Brooks Drysdale with two outs in the top of the ninth to give the University of San Diego a 1-0 West Coast Conference victory at Santa Clara. The victory lifted the Toreros to 15-13, 8-4 in the WCC, and improved starting pitcher Jeff Crane’s record to 5-2. Crane worked eight innings, allowing four hits and striking out eight before Herde came on to get the save.

The loss went to Miles Kelly, a freshman from Poway who allowed only two hits in 8 2/3 innings and was victimized by an error in the ninth inning that put USD’s Ed Scofield on base. After Kelly fell behind in the count, 2-0, to USD’s Brady Clark, he gave way to Drysdale, who walked Clark and allowed Herde to drive Scofield home from third. The Broncos are 8-19, 4-7.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Vista alumna Laura Richards defeated Kristi Bastian in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, at No. 1 singles to lead USD to 6-0 victory over South Florida in the championship match of the USD Classic. All but one of the Toreras won in two sets as USD improved to 9-2. South Florida is 7-10.
