Cup Jury Firm on Bowsprit Ruling

The five-man international jury for the America’s Cup match in May decided Monday not to reconsider its March 5 ruling on the use of bowsprits.

New Zealand, the only challenger with a bowsprit, had hoped the match jury would reconsider its decision that New Zealand used its bowsprit illegally in the first two rounds of the Loius Vuitton Cup Challenge.

A report stating that New Zealand used its bowsprit illegally through the first two rounds of challenger trials was incorrect. A rule change for for the third round made New Zealand’s method illegal, and the Kiwis complied.

An earlier ruling by the LVC international jury approved New Zealand’s technique of attaching the lower corner of its billowing spinnaker or gennaker headsail to the end of the bowsprit instead of a spinnaker pole during certain sailhandling maneuvers.

“We believe that the Louis Vuitton jury and the IACC measures were correct in their original interpretation of bowsprit use,” Peter Blake, New Zealand campaign manager, said in a press release. “However, the match jury determines the rules under which we finish the regatta and New Zealand’s use of the bowsprit will have to comply with the America’s Cup match jury’s interpretation.”

JAI ALAI

Rights to reopen and operate the Jai Alai Fronton Palace in Tijuana have been secured by the company that runs Caliente Racetrack, said Jorge Hank Rhon, LF-Caliente president.

The facility has been closed since Sept. 4, 1990, because of a failure of its parimutuel equipment and the inability to obtain replacement parts. It is set to reopen Friday, with the first game scheduled at 8 p.m.

Caliente, which has operated a race and sports book at the jai alai palace since 1990, will assume full operational control. Mariano Escobedo will maintain ownership of the facility, which will operate daily except Wednesdays.
