COUNTYWIDE : Storm’s Severity Is Downgraded

The severity of the rainstorm expected to hit Ventura County today has been further downgraded, with meteorologists predicting only intermittent showers through today and less than an inch of rainfall in most parts of the county.

“My thought all along was that we wouldn’t get very much out of this particular storm,” said Rea Strange, meteorologist for Pacific Weather Analysis in Montecito.

The latest storm front was expected to strike Ventura County on Wednesday afternoon, but it stalled about 500 miles off the California coast and is now expected to hit land near San Diego today, Strange said.

He predicted a quarter-inch to a half-inch of rainfall today in the county’s coastal areas and from a half-inch to an inch in the mountains.

Fox Weather, a second consultant under contract with the department, also predicted rainfall would be milder than previously anticipated, said Bill Minger, a flood control hydrographer. As long as rainfall is not significantly greater than forecast, there should be little concern of further flooding in the county, he said.

Strange said that skies should clear up through the weekend, though temperatures will remain somewhat cool, with highs in the mid- to upper-60s and overnight lows around 50.
