COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Quick Start Sparks CLU to 21st Consecutive Win

The Cal Lutheran baseball team scored eight runs in the first inning and went on to rout Central Washington, 15-1, in the second round of the UC San Diego Sunshine Classic on Thursday.

Steve Dempsey (7-0) picked up the victory, giving up six hits, including a home run in the bottom of the ninth by Chad Bala.

Cal Lutheran (21-0) had 12 hits and benefited from seven walks and five hit batsmen. Eight players had hits for Cal Lutheran. Jason Wilcox, Jay Lucas, Darrell McMillin and Rawley Jacobson each had two.

Jacobson, who knocked in three runs, hit a two-run home run to highlight a five-run fourth. McMillin’s two-run homer in the top of the ninth made it 15-0.

In other baseball games:

The Master’s 7, Southern California College 1--Mike Smith spun a five-hitter and struck out 11 to guide the visiting Mustangs (9-14) to a nonconference victory.

Andy Martin led the attack for The Master’s, going three for four with two doubles, two runs batted in and one run.

Harbor 9, Mission 4--Harbor racked up 18 hits against host Mission and ran its Southern California Conference record to 8-1. Rolando Avila was three for three with three RBIs and two doubles for Mission (5-12-1, 2-6 in SCC play).

Valley 4, Santa Barbara 4 (12 innings)--Manny Fernandez, who had missed more than a week because of a back injury, allowed no hits in eight-plus innings for Valley in a Western State Conference game that was called because of darkness.

Arnold Settles had three hits, including a two-run homer, and Mario Joy added two hits for Valley (10-13-1, 5-5-1).

With Valley leading, 2-1, in the eighth, Fernandez was removed because he had surpassed an 85-pitch limit set by the Valley coaching staff. Mike Engler relieved and allowed a bad-hop single to Greg Thompson with one out to end the no-hit bid.

Santa Barbara scored three runs in the inning--two coming on bases-loaded walks--to forge a 4-2 lead, but Valley scored twice in the ninth to send the game into extra innings.

San Bernardino Valley 8, Antelope Valley 2--Five Antelope Valley errors led to three unearned runs in a Foothill Conference loss. George Boykins was two for two with two walks and one run for the visiting Marauders (4-13-1, 2-10).

Bakersfield 13, Oxnard 8--John Chaparro had two hits and three RBIs and Ralph Guillen was three for four for Oxnard (2-19, 2-9) in a WSC game at Bakersfield. Adrian Estrada, Steve Susko, and Al Anaya each had two hits for the Condors.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 4, Grossmont 0--Kathi Morales scattered five hits to improve to 3-1 as Moorpark (13-5) won a nonconference game at Grossmont.

Morales’ two-run triple snapped a scoreless tie in the sixth.
