County Plans Periodic Closures of Libraries, Parks, Other Facilities
Dozens of San Diego County facilities, including libraries and public health centers, will be shut down periodically beginning next month, as authorities grapple with ways to save money in the wake of a budget shortfall.
The shutdowns were announced Friday and will begin April 6. County officials said the closures will be done on a staggered basis for 90 days. Facilities that are open 24 hours, such as jails and hospitals, are exempted from the closures.
Health clinics in the South Bay, East San Diego, El Cajon, Oceanside and the Health Services Complex in the Midway District will be affected by the shutdowns. Fifteen libraries throughout the county will also be closed on a periodic basis.
In addition, 37 Department of Social Services offices will be closed periodically between April 6 and June 26. Critical protective services like the Hillcrest Receiving Home of the Child Abuse Hotline will remain open, however.
All county parks will also be closed on three Wednesdays, which will be announced later.
Other county offices that do not deal directly with the public will also be closed on certain days.
