UC San Diego Extension, which has outgrown its downtown quarters, will move its satellite campus to the new One America Plaza building across from the Santa Fe Depot and will expand its offerings beginning in May.

The university will have six classrooms with a combined total of 10,000 square feet on the second floor of the skyscraper. In addition, a UCSD bookstore satellite will occupy 1,500 feet on the first floor.

The UC Board of Regents on Friday approved a five-year lease between UCSD Extension and the building’s landlord.

“We are looking forward to being a major participant in the revitalization and rejuvenation of downtown San Diego,” said Mary L. Walshok, dean of the UCSD Extension.

For four years, UCSD has been renting space from Cal Western University downtown, but the facility didn’t provide enough classrooms. With the move, UCSD Extension will offer more courses, programs and events, Walshok said.
