SAN DIEGO : City Reassigns Housing Chief

Share

Evan Becker, who during the past two years as head of the San Diego Housing Commission has often been at odds with Mayor Maureen O’Connor and other council members over housing policy, was reassigned Friday to the city Planning Department.

He was replaced on a temporary basis by Deputy City Manager Severo Esquivel, City Manager Jack McGrory announced in a memo to the City Council.

Becker, 44, was notified by the council Monday that his one-year contract as executive director of the commission will not be renewed when it expires July 31.

Becker’s critics complained that he and the commission staff were not always forthcoming with information about low-income housing programs. Becker could not be reached Friday for comment.

According to McGrory’s memo, Becker will work with the planning staff on long-range housing and urban revitalization plans.
