SMALL FACES: Frank Zappa is releasing a second boxed set of originally illegal bootleg recordings through Rhino Records in June. “Beat the Boots, Vol. II” will include seven bootlegs packaged in reproductions of the covers found on the illegal releases (and sound only slightly cleaned up), plus a special “Beat the Boots” beret and a booklet of Zappa memorabilia. Zappa is still undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. . . .

Also on the Rhino schedule is Alice Cooper’s “Live at the Whisky,” a previously unreleased 1969 concert of the original, pre-hit band. Liner notes are by Pamela (“I’m With the Band”) Des Barres. . . .

A live George Harrison album, recorded on his recent Japanese tour with Eric Clapton, will be released by Warner Bros. on June 23, with a mix of songs from his Beatles and solo years. . . . The same day, Warner Bros. plans to release the debut by Jenny Muldaur, the daughter of Maria and Geoff Muldaur. Russ Titelman produced. . . .

The Next Nirvana Derby continues: Virgin has signed the Fluid, which like Nirvana is part of Seattle’s Sub Pop Records scene. . . . Jimmy Buffett’s new MCA-distributed Margaritaville label has made its first signing: the Iguanas, a New Orleans-based Tex-Mex-Cajun-rock band that Bruce Springsteen recently jammed with in the small N.O. club the Maple Leaf. . . .

Daniel Lanois, best known for co-producing U2’s last few albums, is set to begin work on his own second album at his home studio in New Orleans. . . . L.A. rockers Slammin’ Gladys, one of the first rock acts on the normally rap Priority label, is bypassing MTV with a steamy video done for the Playboy Channel’s “Hot Rocks” program.
