SAN GABRIEL VALLEY : Freeway Opponents Label Impact Study a ‘Joke’

South Pasadena opponents of extending the Long Beach Freeway from Alhambra to Pasadena called it an “April Fool’s Day” joke when state transportation planners on Wednesday released an environmental impact statement that favors the 6.2-mile roadway proposal.

Getting their first look at the three-inch thick, two-volume environmental study, approved by federal highway officials March 2, opponents and supporters of the project said it confirmed their positions.

Supporters of the $630-million to $660-million project termed the report’s release a victory for commuters throughout Southern California. “We celebrate the release. . . . It’s as if the plan has been in a long coma,” said Peter Lyman, president of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce.
