Los Angeles County supervisors, in their annual listing of gifts, on Wednesday reported accepting freebies ranging from country club memberships and trips abroad to sports tickets and a weekend at a hot air balloon festival.

Supervisor Gloria Molina, who has advocated a ban on officials accepting gifts from anyone doing business with the county, reported receiving $3,943 in gifts in 1991, including cognac, a painting, a silk scarf and free tickets to Dodgers games, USC football and the Joffrey ballet. Molina also received $2,909 in trips to conferences.

Molina’s proposal for City Hall-style ethics reform at the county has drawn opposition from other board members.

The supervisors receive the gifts on top of their $119,000 a year in salary and benefits, plus other perks such as a chauffeur-driven bulletproof car.

Some county department heads also received gifts. For example, Public Works Director Thomas Tidemanson received a trip to China paid for by the Chinese government, and Ted Reed, head of the County Department of Beaches and Harbors, received free memberships in the California Yacht Club and the Marina City Club.

The reports, required by state law, also list outside income and private investments.

Supervisor Mike Antonovich, for example, reported that he has become a partner in a new import-export business, the Barlovento Co., which is working to import potato buds from China, said company President Frederick P. Lyte, a GOP fund-raiser and longtime Antonovich friend.

Antonovich led the supervisors, with $8,900 in gifts, including memberships in the Altadena and Oakmont country clubs.

Supervisor Deane Dana accepted $4,710 in gifts, including a $450 weekend in Indio, given by developer Alexander Haagen.

Supervisor Ed Edelman supplemented his supervisor’s salary by teaching a college law class and working as a labor mediator. He also accepted $5,640 in gifts, including a membership in the Beverly Hills Tennis Club.
