San Jose Shark defenseman Link Gaetz was improving steadily from a head injury he sustained Thursday when his car overturned on a Bay Area highway, a hospital official said.

Gaetz, 23, remained in the intensive care unit at Peninsula Hospital in Burlingame. But doctors upgraded his condition from critical to serious and expected him to recover fully, nursing supervisor Pat Jones said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Gaetz was a passenger in a car driven by Patrick Bell, 22, of San Francisco. Bell suffered minor injuries.
