Mike Tyson began his second week in an Indianapolis prison Thursday by volunteering for work assignments and cooperating with an education assessment, a corrections official said.

“He’s adjusting to incarceration very well,” said Kevin Moore, a Department of Corrections spokesman. “He’s very polite, very cooperative.”

The former heavyweight boxing champion was sentenced last week to six years in prison after his conviction on rape and criminal deviate behavior. He was found guilty of assaulting Desiree Washington, a Miss Black America beauty pageant contestant, in his Indianapolis hotel room last July.

Tyson’s attorneys are still working on legal papers seeking his release from prison pending an appeal. The request was rejected Tuesday.
